چکیده

IN 1922, while investigating the fauna of the New Hebrides under the Percy Sladen Trust, I found that many of the domestic pigs (Suspapuensis Less, and Garn.) kept by the natives were intersexual. These monstrosities had previously been noticed by anthropologists (Codrington, 1891). I dissected one of them and found that it differed from the great majority of the intersex pigs and goats occasionally found in Great Britain in the complete absence of uterus and vagina. Returning to the New Hebrides in 1927, again under the Percy Sladen Trust, 1 made a much more thorough investigation of these pigs, of which this paper is the outcome. I dissected eight more specimens, and in none of them was there the smallest rudiment of uterus or vagina. I also investigated the natives' account of the genetics of the abnormality. I wish to thank the Trustees of the Percy Sladen Memorial Fund and Mrs G. E. Baker and Mr S. J. Baker for providing part of the funds for my investigation of the fauna of the New Hebrides. I wish also to thank Prof. E. S. Goodrich for allowing me the leave of absence which has made my visits to the New Hebrides possible.

Intersexuality of Scomberomorus niphonius from the Coastal Area around Jeju Island, Korea (Teleostei: Scombridae)

This study histologically describes the intersexuality of Scomberomorus niphonius collected from the coastal area near Jeju Island. A total of 126 S. niphonius, collected from March to July 2012 with a total length of 62.4 cm (±17.5) and a total weight of 1,701.9 g (±1,528.9) were used for analyses. From a histological perspective, two types of intersex were confirmed. One type had scattered ge...

Pronounced and prevalent intersexuality does not impede the ‘Demon Shrimp’ invasion

Crustacean intersexuality is widespread and often linked to infection by sex-distorting parasites. However, unlike vertebrate intersexuality, its association with sexual dysfunction is unclear and remains a matter of debate. The 'Demon Shrimp,' Dikerogammarus haemobaphes, an amphipod that has invaded continental waterways, has recently become widespread in Britain. Intersexuality has been noted...

A widespread and distinctive form of amphipod intersexuality not induced by known feminising parasites.

Intersexuality occurs in a diverse range of animals, and its study offers insights into basic reproductive biology. Investigations in amphipods suggest intersexuality results from incomplete feminisation caused by sex-distorting parasites. It has also been noted that 2 intersex phenotypes occur in males of the amphipod Echinogammarus marinus, an external phenotype, in which males possess rudime...

Crustacean intersexuality is feminisation without de-masculinisation: implications

19 20 The dysfunction associated with intersexuality in vertebrates and molluscs is often a 21 serious threat to ecosystems. Although poorly understood, crustacean intersexuality is 22 associated with contamination and includes forms linked to increased sex-ratio distorting 23 parasites at polluted sites. Despite the importance of crustaceans for monitoring 24 vulnerable aquatic habitats, littl...

P-65: Maternal Effect Genes in Mammalian Reproduction

Background: Regulation of gene expression in mammalian embryos is not completely known. Pre-implantation embryos need maternal RNA and proteins synthesized during oogenesis, to regulate development before mater-embryo transition, as the grown oocyte and the 1-cell zygote are transcriptionally silent. There are some oocyte-specific genes called maternal effect genes which may account for this ea...
